Portable Isolation Unit available for COVID-19 cases
The new Capital Air Ambulance new Portable Isolation Unit (PIU) is now fully operational. The PIU is a self-contained negative pressure device that facilitates the safe transfer of patients with contagious, infective diseases, such as COVID-19.
This device provides a safe, high-quality transfer solution and can be fully decontaminated between each use. We have already used the PIU on a successful evacuation mission from mainland Spain to the UK recently.
If you have patients with proven or suspected COVID-19, these patients can now be safely moved by air and land transport by Capital Air Ambulance. Each case is coordinated on an individual basis by Dr Forrington, Capital's Medical Director who is also a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in the NHS. Dr Forrington is pleased to take direct calls from clients anytime in order to discuss individual requirements.
All patient transports with proven, or suspected, COVID-19 will be undertaken in the new PIU to ensure the health and safety of our flight medics and crew.
For asymptomatic patients, Capital Air Ambulance operates a policy that involves a careful individual risk assessment prior to each mission. A negative COVID-19 screen is not mandatory. These patients are transported in PPE themselves and the medical crew also wear PPE during the mission. This allows us to safely move patients who are unable to access COVID-19 PCR swab testing.
The procedures and policies in use by Capital Air Ambulance have been carefully developed in partnership with Public Health England.
